Introductory Notes:
Patty Mahar: faculty in Social Work focus on therapeutic recreation. Regular worshipper at Christus Rex with her 8 year old son, is Catholic and worships there in the summer. Is on education committee now and has been on another committee for a total of 3 ½ years of committee involvement.

Jan Schauer: nursing faculty at UND. Married to med school professor - heart in rural medicine. At Christus Rex Chair of center for faithful leadership ministry.
Member of Calvary Lutheran in Grand Forks.

FF: Central Foci of Christus Rex?

J: Outreach. I've been on ministry boards the last 3 yrs. People hear about programs - creative, innovative things going on here. They are comfortable coming for a faculty book study. It's a place where everyone feels welcome.
Tabula is an extension - a mesh of the private sector with the faith community. An exhilarating, exciting spot.
Most exciting is the internship program. I was involved with getting it going. It's exciting to me both as faculty and as someone interested in what's going on with youth.
Internship is variable according to what works for the student. We've had 5 student interns in the 4 yrs of the program. The students design a program that fits their degree program and get credit for it. They define their roles as leaders here with the supervision of Tim & Kathy.

P: I'm currently on the education committee and was on another committee for 3-3 ½ yrs. Outreach here is amazing. There are a variety of ways students' needs are met - a wide scale of needs met with individualized attention.
Programs meet a variety of needs also - that makes the community. Ex. Social justice, deacons.
I've worshipped here regularly for 10 years, but haven't participated in faculty outreach.

FF: What is the outreach of Christus Rex?

J: it's beyond the specific student population. I worked at the High school leadership seminar with college kids who have been planning it for over a year. Christus Rex sees itself as part of the community and region.
Christus Rex provides a structured way for students to get involved in the wider community - Habitat, Flood relief, poverty relief…
Christus Rex has an open door policy on campus anybody is welcome to Monday night football, Tuesdays with Bennie, etc. High value on hospitality

P: Outreach = community people on committees, in programs, also high availability for students. High level of commitment not necessary. Tim & Kathy are very receptive, not regimented.

J: Non-judgemental, particularly compared to other (LCMS) campus minister. Questioning is welcome, diversity is welcome.

FF: Location of Christus Rex?

J: Fairly central - university is the main street, (Christus Rex is on the north side of University Ave) most classrooms are across the way. Med school is to the north, aeronautics outside of town.

FF: Youth stories?

P: A young woman did undergrad here, now in grad study for ministry. She struggled with personal and religious issues. At Christus Rex she grew in leadership, acceptance/value of self, acceptance of her own issues. Now she's doing her master's in New York. This is where she came for help. Tim & Kathy gave her space to be who she was and to find the resources as she needed them to define herself.

J: I have gotten to know the interns the best - leaders pushing forward.
Internship is a place to embrace, experiment, succeed or fail. It facilitates inclusiveness of students with very different styles.
Christus Rex not tasky, goal-oriented, detail oriented. Kind of anything goes, but with a safety net.
